Bacteria against which ampicillin often is effective include: enterococci, Listeria monocytogenes, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, some Hemophilus influenzae, Gardnerella vaginalis, Bordetella pertussis, and some E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella, and Shigella. Susceptibilities of bacteria to antibiotics vary from location to location.
